报告主题:Experimental and Numerical Modeling of Modern Building Glass Facades Under Fire

报告摘要:

In mega cities, glass facade systems used in modern high-rise buildings have gained popularity due to their architectural features, and superior acoustic and thermal insulation properties. The glass facades are widely installed in shopping malls and office buildings to reduce the acoustic impacts and heat loads while allowing natural daylight to enter. Owing to its brittle nature, glass expands and breaks easily at elevated temperatures, and this can escalate the severity of fire outbreak. Such brittle nature of glass is of particular concern because the loss of facade integrity may provide a channel for fire spreading to other floors and adjacent buildings. To prevent fire from spreading, glass facade must be carefully designed aiming to enhance its thermal performance and minimizing the occurrence of fire spreading vertically to different floors or horizontally to adjacent buildings. Therefore, it is essential to understand the thermomechanical mechanisms of glass facade under fire. The present study develops experiments and computational frameworks based on meshfree/meshless techniques to investigate the thermal degradation of glass facades under fire conditions. In this talk, experiments and numerical simulations are presented to examine the fire performance of glass facades under different fire scenarios. These findings will help to improve the fire protection design of modern building glass facade systems, address various safety and reliability concerns, and provide valuable theoretical and practical resources for modern building design.

   刘锦茂 (K. M. Liew),欧洲科学院院士 (Academia Europaea),香港工程科学院院士 (Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences),现任香港城市大学杨建文讲座教授 (可持续工程)、研究生院院长、仿生工程中心主任。刘教授曾任香港城市大学建筑学及土木工程学系主任、新加坡南洋理工大学终身教授、南洋理工大学超级计算与可视化中心的创始主任。凭借在学术领域的卓越贡献,刘教授连续年被科睿唯安 (Web of Science Group, Clarivate Analytics) 评选为全球高被引科学家。2001年至今,刘教授被 Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) 评选为全球工程领域高被引学者。截至目前,刘教授的学术论文引用超过50,000次,H-index为112。

报告主题:Voltage Controlled Topologically Protected Wave Propagation in Dielectric Membrane-type Acoustic Metamaterials

报告摘要:

Topological acoustic metamaterials have attracted enormous research attention in recent years.  A significant hallmark of these structures is that they can support interface modes that are robust to structural disturbance and protected by topology.  However, most of the studies are often limited to the passive structures that manifest wave propagation at fixed frequency ranges.  In view of the shortage of non-passive topological acoustic metamaterials, this work has a primary motive to study the active control of topologically protected wave propagation in soft dielectric membrane-type metamaterials (MAM) based on quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE).  The unit cell of the periodic structure is designed with symmetry. Then, the plane wave expansion method is adopted to analytically capture the system dispersion properties.  A finite element model is further developed and excellent convergence with the analytical result is presented. By adjusting locations of spraying discs in the honeycomb unit cell, mode shape inversion is observed, separating the topologically trivial state from the nontrivial counterpart.  Consequently, the topologically protected interface modes (TPIMs) are observed.  Additionally, an electrical voltage that lies within the locking-up limit is applied to MAM to actively control the working frequency of the TPIM.  Further, several waveguide paths are designed to control the robust wave propagation in the structure. Conclusively, a voltage-controlled topological metamaterial is designed to actively tune the working frequency range of the device.

报告人简介:

   林志华教授是香港城市大学建筑学及土木工程学系教授、注册专业工程师、美国机械工程师协会(ASME)会士、美国土木工程师协会(ASCE)会士。2000年起在香港城市大学(CityU)建筑学及土木工程学系担任教职,并且在悉尼大学(USYD)、华中科技大学、大连理工大学、浙江大学等大学担任客座教授职位。主要研究方向为板壳结构振动,智能压电材料动力学,纳米力学和辛弹性力学。现担任《Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures》期刊主编,《Journal of Vibration Engineering & Technologies》期刊亚太区副主编,《International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos》,《Applied Mathematical Modeling》期刊副主编, 2009年被《英国皇家学会学报A》授予首席审阅人荣誉。2010年与大连理工大学钟万勰院士和姚伟岸教授合作出版的学术专著《辛弹性力学》,成为世界科学出版商当时最畅销书。在国际SCI期刊上发表了超过200篇学术论文,他引次数超过3000次。
